- Edited 8 years agoHere's another new "remaster" for 2014.
I've examined three pressings with different masters of this record. The first one, the original from W. Germany, 1983. The second, the 1997 remasters. And now we have this 2014 version.
I still don't see any reason for anyone to give up on the original 1983 version, even with some shortcomings like some tracks sounding like coming off a tape playback ("Equinoxe 7", as an example). There are indeed some 2 or 3 tracks that sound better in one or other of the two remasters, but it doesn't warrant them to be called superior to the original.
To me, the 1997 remaster is muffled and the bass is boosted, unbalancing the record. It's louder than original but not yet a breed from loudness war.
The 2014 version is much louder, very up to the standards of mastering these days. A brickwall, almost. Some of the tracks have a wider stereo separation, but that doesn't mean it sounds better than original - it was done to sound more like being live ("Orient Express", in this case). "Souvenir of China" is the worst mastered song, which had its synths and percussion boosted a bit over the top, letting me think it was intentional to bring it closer to the "Aero" 2004 version.
You better get old Jarre CD pressings and not let yourself moved by these new "hot" CDs. The 2014 series also did not even honor the original artwork fonts - you can see the same fonts in Concerts & Magnetic Fields.
