Donna Summer's second album for the Geffen label, "I'm A Rainbow" (1981), had been shelved by Mr. Geffen and marked a sad end of a long, successful relationship between Summer, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. Instead Summer was paired with Quincy Jones in order to deliver a smash of an album. Although the resulting album delivered two sizeable singles with "Love Is In Control" (US #10) and "State Of Independence" (UK #14) and was a healthy seller, it didn't quite live up to the expectations. It's easy to see why - absurdly titled "Donna Summer", the project in the end was much more about Quincy Jones than about Donna Summer. Overblown and overproduced, it is ironically one of her least personal albums overall.

"Love Is In Control" opens the album with a catchy guitar riff and good verses. Then comes the dull chorus with shrill backing singers drowning out Donna's voice completely. A rather messy single, and one of her least memorable hits. "Mystery Of Love" is a middle-of-the-road duet with James Ingram, nothing special. "The Woman In Me", the third single lifted from the album, was only a medium hit but probably the best track on the whole album. Summer's cover of Vangelis' "State Of Independence" is typically overproduced by Jones but manages to be interesting because of its unusual rhythm and compelling composition.

Things don't get much better on Side 2 which opens with the sickly "Livin' In America", followed by the contrived Bruce Springsteen-penned rocker "Protection", two decent album fillers "If It Hurts Just A Little" and "Love Is Just A Breath Away" (the latter co-written by Summer) and a boring, jazzy version of "Lush Life".

Quincy Jones may be the producer of the world's best-selling album ever (Michael Jackson's "Thriller" of course) - but this effort is far less stellar. One of Donna Summer's most uninteresting albums.
