HNN is Gregg Anthe’s project. The name sounded a bit familiar: and yes, he used to be a member from Morthem Vlade Art. This band made during the second half of the nineties until 2005. eclectic and experimental music that was mixed with goth rock, neo-classical and industrial. The minimal synthpop from Hsilgne Nekorb Ni is easier to digest. L île nue is their second full album on La Forme Lente.

The album opens with the fantastic titletrack, that reminds me of an 80’s science-fiction soundtrack Blade Runner maybe?). Lovely synths and then that mysterious voice of Annika Grill, who also does the guest vocals on Un temps ideal and Je pars (a duet).

I’m not so fond of the tracks thatAnthe sang himself, because of his monotonous voice. But that’s my personal opinion. Fact is that fans of the genre will be satisfied: atmospheric, sometimes melancholic synthpop with retrosynths. Some tracks with simple but beautiful Kraftwerklike-melodies.

The songs are filled with details that are only noticed after a few times. The discovery trip ends with the dreamy instrumental Ni temporal. An interesting album that slowly exposes its details.

HNN is het éénmansproject van Gregg Anthe: een naam die vaag een belletje doet rinkelen. Hij was sinds eind jaren ’90 immerslid van Morthem Vlade Art waarmee hij eclectische, experimentele muziek maakte, variërend van gothrock tot industrial. De minimale synthpop van Hsilgne Nekorn Ni is evenwel heel wat lichter verteerbaar.

De fantastische openingstrack, die tevens de titeltrack is, doet me meteen denken aan de soundtrack van een sciencefictionfilm uit de jaren ’80 (Blade Runner misschien?). Heerlijke synthesizers aangevuld met de mysterieuze stem van Annika Grill. Zij verzorgt ook de guest vocals op Un temps idéal en Je pars (een heus duet).

De 3 nummers die Anthe op zijn eentje heeft ingezongen, liggen me wat minder. Ik vind zijn stemgeluid/gebuik wat aan de saaie kant, maar dat is iets persoonlijk. Feit is dat liefhebbers van het genre deze plaat zeker zullen smaken: Retro-synths, sfeervolle ietwat melancholische synthpop met eenvoudige maar mooie Kraftwerkachtige melodieën. De nummers zijn rijk aan details die pas na een paar luisterbeurten opvallen. De ontdekkingsreis eindigt met de dromerige instrumental Ni temporel. Een boeiend album dat langzaam zijn details prijsgeeft.

Prolific French musician Gregg Anthe returns to his Hsilgne Nekorb Ni project for a second album, once again released by Montpellier label La Forme Lente. Last seen operating as Hsilgne Nekorb Ni (or HNN if you are a fan of brevity) on a collaboration with Jeff And Jane Hudson for a Electric Voice 12", you get the feeling Anthe enjoys the extra space an album affords after listening to L'île nue, which we assume is named after the '60s Japanese art house flick. More prominence is given to vocals here than on the debut HNN LP Piece Radiophonique, with Anthe sharing microphone duties with Annika Grill and this is a sign of his compositional confidence now. There's a real elegance to the way their vocal delivery weaves in with the musical arrangements with L'île nue sounding like Gallic New Wave of the highest order and very much complemented by the fine artwork.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first release by Hsilgne Nekorb Ni (aka HNN, aka Gregg Anthe) on La Forme Lente. Pièce Radiophonique confidently traversed styles. Synth Wave and heartbreak were countered with uplifting ambience, Industrial dereliction brightened by violin strings for a superb debut. Since then HNN have been less than active, since 2011 the one man band only managing a split 12” with Philippe Laurent for Electric Voice. Finally it’s time for a return, and a new album.

LÎle Nue is introduced by the title track. Vocals soar over cascading arpeggios, grandiose melodies and shimmering sounds. Clean chords and beats make up the synth rich “Tes Mots” before the bittersweet elegy of “Je Pars.” The LP is quite different to its predecessor, the DIY warmth of HNN’s debut being superseded by heightened production quality. The flip is introduced by the honeyed tones of “Un Temps Idéal,” sweetened synths coupled with emotion filled lyrics. A playful whimsy runs through the record, as in the 8-Bit inspired “Les Heures Faciles.” The LP closes with the soundtrack drama of “Ni Temporal (La Grande Ville.)” Soulful strings swoop as HNN bid farewell.

LÎle Nue maps an evolution in the Anthe’s sound. The LP is vastly different to Pièce Radiophonique, with rougher production edges being sanded down and refined. Vocals play a much more central role in this latest album, words woven through vivid analogue sounds. Comprehensive and compelling material from the Frenchman.

Si Hsilgne Nekorb Ni (HNN) n’a qu’un album à son actif, paru sur La Forme Lente en septembre 2011 et intitulé Pièce Radiophonique, en plus d’un split single avec Philippe Laurent divulgué par Electric Voice Records et comprenant un featuring de Jeff & Jane Hudson, s’il vous plaît, Gregg Anthe, son instigateur, n’est pas tombé de la dernière pluie. En témoigne le tracklisting de l’album de remixes de Pièce Radiophonique : In Aeternam Vale, ADN’Ckrystall, Das Ding, In Trance 95, Kas Product ou Bonjour Tristesse. La reconnaissance des pairs. Dès 1995, tour à tour actif au sein de Morthem Vlade Art, auteur de cinq albums dont l’électronique Photography In Things en 2002 sur Pandaimonium Records puis de In Broken English avec Yannick Dangin Leconte, alignant deux références dont Sometimes The Scars en 2011 sur Str8linerecords, l’homme au regard noir et pénétrant a de la suite dans les idées et conduit son projet HNN avec Emmanuelle Desmonts-Roudgé sur les sentiers d’une synth-pop empruntant tout autant à Kraftwerk qu’à la grande tradition française figurée par Jacno. Tes Mots, subtile digression synthétique chantée avec toute la justesse que la perfection mélodique du morceau requiert, bénéficie d’une mise en images réalisée par Dalibor Baric absolument obnubilante, utilisant le found footage tout autant que le collage, pour illustrer cet extrait de L’île Nue à voir le jour le 28 avril prochain, toujours sur La Forme Lente, reprenant du service après l’ultime Circuit d’Actes (lire). Le duo Hsilgne Nekorb Ni (HNN), ou dialogue organique entre Gregg Anthe et Emmanuelle Desmonts-Roudgé, a sorti le 28 avril dernier via La Forme Lente son second LP, L’île Nue, fragile et élégiaque romance synthétique que la vidéo de Tes Mots avait subtilement mis en orbite (voir). D’autant plus gracile, car tenant sur le fil de vocalises jouant la haute voltige, l’intime et partagé morceau Je Pars, trouve quant à lui sa traduction cathodique dans les mains d’Hugo Arcier, s’accaparant les technologies de l’images pour déstabiliser le regard par l’ondulation dans l’espace de deux corps nus et décharnés, marivaudant et tournoyant en échos à cette fabuleuse maxime glissée à deux voix « la constance est une mort », pour finalement s’unir en une seule forme oblongue que seule l’imagination, portée par de luminescents claviers, ose interpréter avant une fugace implosion. Signe de reconnaissance, s’il en fallait un, Je Pars à récemment fait l’objet d’une relecture signée Trisomie 21.

Lile nue to wspaniała i prawdziwie lirycznie przejmująca płyta. Francuska formacja przyzwyczaiła już zresztą słuchaczy do zdecydowanie własnego, odrębnego tonu w estetyce minimal wave. Nowy długogrający album HNN jest zaś kolejnym potwierdzeniem, że muzyka ta rezerwuje dla siebie miejsce wyjątkowe.

HNN to skrót od anagramu Hsilgne Nekorb Ni (In Broken English) – i rzeczywiście, muzycy konsekwentnie unikają śpiewania po angielsku, kontynuując niejako znakomitą tradycję francuskiej chłodnej fali, której najpiękniejsze utwory powstały właśnie w języku narodowym. Nadaje to smaku i stylu również najnowszej płycie; artykulacja francuska wybitnie bowiem współgra z syntetycznymi brzmieniami. Jeśli dodać do tego (pyszny po prostu!) wokal Anniki Grill… Tak, ta muzyka sprawia ogromną, niemal zmysłową przyjemność.

Brzmienia Lile nue mają zdecydowanie żeńską naturę, jednak jest to kobiecość inna od tej, do której przyzwyczaiła nas współczesność. Jej określeniami są: eteryczny wdzięk, zwiewna tajemniczość, polot i styl. Nie znajdziemy tu nieudolnie naśladowanych „kanonów mody”, siermiężności i wulgarnego ekshibicjonizmu. Najnowsza płyta HNN to raczej półprzejrzysty woal, za którym skrywa się powab tyleż subtelny, co potężny.

Tytuł albumu został zapożyczony z klasycznego dzieła japońskiej kinematografii – „Nagiej Wyspy” Kaneto Shindo, czarno białego obrazu z 1960 roku. Zawarte w tym filmie poetyckie ujęcie gry kontrastów pomiędzy dwoma przeciwstawnymi kolorytami (tak na polu wizualnym, jak i psychologicznym), oraz – co charakterystyczne dla sztuki japońskiej – łagodne niwelowanie tychże kontrastów, ów zachwycający dialog półcieni – wszystko to jest gdzieś na tej płycie, przełożone na język muzyki, dla której nie ma dziś porównania. Powiedzmy wprost: HNN to zdecydowani mistrzowie „balladowego tonu” we współczesnej odmianie minimal / synth wave.

Osiem kompozycji zamieszczonych na Lile nue to także odpowiednia miara, by pozostawić zarazem niedosyt i wrażenie spełnienia; miara wyznaczająca moją nieprzerwaną miłość do tej muzyki, trwającą od czasu, gdy w 2011 roku ukazał się debiutancki longplay HNN – Piece Radiophonique.

Dawno już chyba równie gorliwie nie zapraszałem do wnętrza któregokolwiek z wydanych niedawno albumów.
