Between 1970-71, Jimmy McGriff put out four of the best albums he ever released. Of the four, BLACK PEARL (Blue Note) is an essential live set, and SOUL SUGAR is probably the best of his studio albums from the period. "Ain't It Funky Now", "Bug Out", "The Now Thing", "Fat Cakes" and "New Volume" are all highlights, but there's not a bad song here. Some of the funkiest soul jazz you'll ever hear. This pressing sounds mostly great, but it's a bit lacking in the low end. Otherwise it's quite good. My copy plays beautifully, nice and clean, with the faintest trace of occasional surface noise. If you enjoy this, seek out BLACK PEARL, GROOVE GREASE and ELECTRIC FUNK. Good stuff.
