Both "Bop Bop" by Fats Comet & the Big Sound and "Are People People?" by Depeche Mode ("re-remixed by Adrian Sherwood") make heavy, albeit unauthorized and uncredited, use of the first 8 seconds of the Citadels' 1964 rendition of "When I Woke Up This Morning."

The Citadels consisted of Dennis Ostrom (lead vocal, "dobluesky" on YouTube as of 2012-12-24) of Orangeburg, New York; Steve Paglierani ("kherheb1" on YouTube as of 2012-12-24) of Tappan, New York; Peter Cacciamani of Nyack, New York; and Jane Eckerson of Nanuet, New York.

The singers in the "bop bop bop" clip are probably Peter Cacciamani and Steve Paglierani.

"When I Woke Up This Morning" was written by Morris "Mickey" Smarr, Leon Ivey, Ernest "Ernie" Harriston (a.k.a. Ernie Johnson), and Dwain "Danny" Robinson. (The fourth composer may have been Danny Robinson's older brother Bobby, but Danny Robinson is more likely.) It was originally performed by the Bop Chords (a.k.a. the Bop-Chords) in the summer of 1956.
