I was wondering why the Pittsburgh 74 gig was included here when it was also included in the road to red box set. Upon playing the Blu-Ray & DVD-A discs i was delighted to discover that the version here in this set is the original 1974 quad mix created for the KBFH Radio broadcast! a really great inclusion guaranteed to please the sort of person who buys these high end box sets.
A Longer version of the Quad mix was broadcast in 1974 but was lost in the fire that destroyed KBFH's mixdown tapes
we're lucky this fragment survived

Although its not particularly clear from the packaging or the discogs entry , the 5.1 version of Easy Money is from Amsterdam 73.
making it the 4th mix of that show in this set!

sadly age has not been kind to the soundtrack of the 1973 central park performance footage however the French TV footage from April 1974 is stunning! the audio is so great you won't notice that its only mono.

I get the impression from the liner notes and my own listening that the available sources from this period required a lot more restoration than those on the Road to Red Box
The reconstruction of the complete Amsterdam & Zurich gigs was definitely a case of unscrambling an egg!
In case you're wondering why there is yet another version of Zurich starting at CD 22-5 its an audience recording, the only way we now have to hear the original versions of these live improvisations without the studio overdubs.

I love how a Quad version of the March 74 Mainz Elzer Hof gig was created by combining a soundboard recording with an audience recorded bootleg. i really wish more bands would do this. the combined recording has a wonderfully powerful sound, especially the drums, it also happens to be one of their best ever gigs.
.
CD22-8 -> 22-10 is the rest of the Elzer Hof, Mainz, Germany, March 74 gig, not a 1973 Mainz show as written in the discogs entry above.
You certainly get the impression that KC are trying to give you as much as possible in their box sets

I do feel very grateful to the bootleggers who sneaked tape recorders into gigs all those years ago, making it possible to restore complete shows all these years later

update 25/7/21
So why only 4 stars? well the new complete versions of the 3 1973 pro recordings (Glasgow, Zurich & Amsterdam) and the Pittsburgh Quad mix sound really shrill and thin to me. in comparison the Hi -Rez discs also contain The Nightwatch album and a chunk of the Great Deceiver and they sound much nicer.

i love that there's so many different mixes/versions of the different shows
once you get your head around which disc contains what its a real treasure trove
for instance you can hear Zurich as a pro- quality soundboard with overdubs on the mincer, as a pure audience source or as a soundboard patched with the audience tape to bypass the overdubs. neat huh?

so the trebly EQ issue on 4 of the recordings is a minor thing set against all the stunning material on this set, it seems every gig from 74 was amazing
if i could give half stars i'd give 4 and a half

there are known faults with discs 22 & 23, but DGM are replacing them
email dec[at]panegyric[dot]net for replacement discs.

summary:
buy the road to red box set first and if you love the live concerts on that pick this box up second

Anyone knows how many were made? It only says on dmglive 'limited to single press'?
Thanks

This is simply an amazing box set. As a hardcore Crimson fan, I could not be happier. The sound quality of the concerts is amazing, with studio material even more so. Worth buying for the blu-rays alone. Some say music should be heard in stereo, but you have not experienced Crimson until you've heard them in 5.1. If you consider yourself a King Crimson fan, buy this. You will not regret it, I absolutely assure it.
