Coming up in the midwest leads one to have a bit of a built in prejudice against all the spiritual, post-hippy, west coast dance music of the 90's. Chicago and Detroit reign supreme and everything else is either trashy acid breaks or fluffy candy raver bullshit. Or at least this was the schema my puny brain was operating off of for many years. What a treat it has been to discover the depth that so much of this west coast stuff has to it. Its very clear to me now that guys like Phil, Freaky Chakra, etc were plugged into something quite special that resulted in their music being just as profound (if not more) than the most revered Detroit cuts.
