Reviews
- Truly, one of Coldplay's best releases. I really don't care what others say, the album has a very good feel that makes me feel like I'm the 80's. The whole album seems like almost a concept album with the lyrics. I'll break it down
Square One brings a sci-fi kind of opening to the album, not fully detailing what's going to be in the album, but a good start.
What If reminds me of songs like "Amsterdam" and "Trouble", mostly piano-based and Martin's almost a-Capella singing.
White Shadows returns to Square One almost, but shows some good clean guitar from Buckland and deep druming from Champion.
Fix You is segued directly in from White Shadows, and is like a soft ballad. This is a really good song on the album; the slow buildup, then the breakdown, and the quiet end.
Talk feels VERY science like. Some echoing here and there on the verses and decent bass coming from Berryman. Favorite part is the section before the last verse. Probably the only time I've heard Coldplay "jam" on this album.
X&Y returns to the soft kind of music, with the chorus and synthstrings throughout the song, but it harmonizes well.
A Message: Another "Green Eyes"-esque piece. Mostly acoustic and very powerful in the choruses, especially Martin's singing.
Low..... The most awkward song on the album... but is one of my favourites. The guitar is completely drowned in Berryman's bass and Champion's use on the COWBELL. Song takes unexpected psychedelic half-time feel near the end.
The Hardest Part: Probably the most happiest sounding song on the album. Love the guitar and piano. And Chris' high singing makes it even better!
Swallowed in the Sea: Very good ballad, slow, ending just the way it began. Almost like a full circle song.
Twisted Logic: The most severe song on the album. Buckland uses a VERY strange tuning and tone on this song. Sound like I'm in the 70's listening to Yes or something.
'Til Kingdom Came: Martin's supposed duet with Johnny Cash. Hidden track that has piano and Martin's fast acoustic strumming. Cash was going to record his part for the song, but died before completing it... Still is a good ending to the album.
In the end, I'd give it 4.5 stars for being a very well structured piece of work, very compelling and awe inspiring. It doesn't really catch on first, but it grows on you.
