After the success of Time (The Revelator), Welch and Rawlings confidently take to the studio again with new artistic goals.

Though I'm not altogether sure Welch's aspirations for a "happier record" have been attained, other themes such as creating tunes that "reflect change and growth" are inarguable forces which elevate the songwriting and musicality exhibited in Soul Journey to the standards one has come to expect from this outstanding duo. Purists may be taken aback by the number of instruments gracing select tracks wherein the overall musicality may initially be best described as a muddied southern rock sound (ex. Wrecking Ball). But listeners need only step outside the somewhat narrowed expectations molded by Welch and Rawlings' past efforts to appreciate this brave and marked evolution in their sound.

There's no insta-love here. And while the album as a whole is not as accessible from the get-go as their previous works - a gradual appreciation and deeper accord (at the very least) is attainable with just a few listenings.

Highlights include: Look At Miss Ohio, One Little Song, I Made A Lover's Prayer, Wrecking Ball
