To get one thing out first: I think, Boris Blank is one of the most innovative, most important creators of electronic music, not to mention he's a true pioneer in his art. As a longtime fan of his work in YELLO I was pretty excited when I learned about this kickstarter project, even though the trade-off was spending hell of a lot of money if you were "just" in it for the music, not so much the extraordinary packaging. The "Hands On Yello" project back in the mid-nineties already gave a glimpse of the vast musical archives of Mr Blank, so why should I care about costly media, vinyls, cassettes, box sets, when Blank unveils his huge treasure of music?

Speaking of which, my reception of "Electrified" was rather lukewarm. Not because of the overall quality of the tracks presented in this compilation, but because I expected a rather different direction, maybe a more historical approach. The majority of the tracks feel and sound like material mainly from the "Zebra" era of Yello, when the Swiss masters leaned heavily into a more dance-able, modern approach (same goes with "Pocket Universe" and its successors). While I won't deny the historicity of 20 year old material, I was rather interested in the older stuff, when Yello were just starting out with "Solid Pleasure" and "Claro Que Si". While you get a little bit of that with tracks like "Delta Boots", for me personally it's just not enough.

In the end, "Electrified" feels more like an exploration into 90s-Yello b-side material, rather than the true gems of the past, when Yello were totally unique, pioneering electronic music like no-one else (even better than Kraftwerk, if I may commit this act of heresy).
Still - it's a great collection of tracks, that even in it's overwhelming magnitude feels at least two sizes too small.

What an incredible release by one of the most inventive, influential yet least appreciated electronic music producer of our time, Boris Blank. The mastermind behind Yello, Boris has been experimenting with sound for an eternity (not saying you're old Boris), and here on Electrified we get a sampling of his evil genius that spans the last three decades. I opted for the 2xCD version and while I realize I missed out on a bunch of material, I feel this version condenses the best of his unreleased work and is an excellent snapshot of Boris Blank the artist. I also agree that "synthpop" isn't really an apt description for this music, but it's not so experimental or avante garde either - instead I think it's the perfect balance between early techno, soundtrack music, and downtempo - at least a very eclectic and creative version of it. In all tracks you get the trademark zany sounds and effects that have typified Boris's music over the years, as well as some more introspective and dare I say "deep" stuff that didn't really fit in the Yello canon of work. You owe it to yourself to listen to this wonderful collection, and this is one of the rare times I can say it demands a physical purchase - the liner notes, artwork and presentation are all top shelf and compliment the music perfectly. Congratulations to Boris for giving us another must-have chapter in his music journey, and here's to many more.

Thanks to everyone over at kickstarter who made this release possible. If you were one of the 696 backers, then you certainly know your electronic music. For those of you who never heard of Yello or Boris Blank, sit back and learn; this is how you make electronic music. There is something unique and different when Boris steps into studio, usually magic happens in the form of electronic music that is timeless. Although most of the materials presented here are 20-30 years old, they sound better and more polished than a lot of new music released by psudo producers who are being marketed as something special. Most of these tracks may be short, but they work really well due to Boris' meticulous attention to detail and sound design; it's not about how long the track is but how well it captures your imagination during those few minutes.

The material on the LPs and CD 1 & 2 (with couple of exceptions) were until now only available as digital download under the title "Avant Garden" through limited specialty retailers, so it's a revelation to finally own them on Vinyl and CD. The previously unreleased materials from Rote Fabrik (CD 3 and tape!) are good too but weaker in my opinion compared to the first 2 CD. If you missed this release, I think the Promo CD (E20) is a good alternative. It's a nice selection of tracks with most of the highlights present. Finally, labeling the style of this music as "Synth-Pop" is a bit misleading, maybe couple of tracks on "Rote Fabrik", but for the most part this is purely experimental.

Some favorites in no particular order:
- The Last Mile
- Dome
- The Time Tunnel [Version included in this release is the longer remix cut, a shorter version was released digitally, both are good]
- Intervals
- She's Got Balls
- A Touch Of Magic
- Too Many Questions
