Flat pressing, no depth nor soundstage. This is the only record i have ever bought and regret buying. It makes no difference between playing this on a turntable or directly from streaming services
Flat quiet press. Compared to the 1985 mix there is a difference. Wouldn’t say muted but there was some changes. Still sounds dynamic and full. I did notice on side A the mix is a slightly heavier on the left channel. Also I did have to add a couple dB on my preamp it is mixed lower than the 1985 version. Overall this a solid press. But if you have the option to snag a good 1985 copy, grab it.
In my humble opinion, this pressing is a very poor version of this excellent album. Very poor separation of instruments, in fact very poor soundstage, but even the most basic stereo is difficult to appreciate. Also, the poor overall volume of the album is a shame. I hope to very soon compare it with Mercury's 1985 first pressing, be it from the USA or the European one, but this 2014 pressing RE invites you not to keep this version of the album in your personal collection.
I recently bought this, and it just wasn’t hitting me like it used to. Then I bought an original 1985 copy. Playing them one after another really brought home just how horrible this version is. The record remains stellar. Just stay away from this muted junk version
Mine sounded digital, even boxy on my transistor system, but it opened up on my valve system. It was harsh through transistors, but lush with the valves. The pressing is nice and quiet too.
The compression is strong with this one. The dynamics just aren't there. The stereo image is also non-existent. Everything's just brickwalled. Not an immersive listening experience.
If you dial the treble and bass to 2:30, and the mid to 11:00, you might be a sound that's half listenable.
Also seem to be a mastering error on Side 2. 'I Believe' should segue into 'Broken', except here there's a gap between them. Very glaring and annoying error.
Still, happy I have this one on vinyl. Amazing album, BTW.
This pressing is garbage, it sounds compressed and has a lack of bass, making a great album not fun to listen to at all. Don’t waist your time with this one, seek out one of the originals, they sound much better if you can find a good one.
The complaints on the sound quality on this re-issue could also be applied to the OG USA pressing. Lack of bass? Inner groove distortion? These sides are over 22 min long, meaning the only possible improvement in sonics would be the result of spreading the album onto 2 discs, preferably at 45 RPM.
