Reviews
- Edited 12 days agoI have a copy for sale. PM if you're interested. LPs are NM. Cover has a small split on top.
- My copy of this looks identical - has the Made in Nippon verbiage, 2012, etc - but one LP is grey marbled and the other is a white with grey streaks. Heavy pressing. Not looking to sell. Just putting this out there in case others have the same pressing/variant.
- I had this album which I bought for $40 at the time, and sold it for only a few dollars more years later. The “Made In Nippon” print on the back sleeve is an interesting touch and screams “bootleg “. Its hard to judge the sound quality when we don’t even know the source material: is it a copy of the master tape? Or is this the 1991 CD cut onto a lacquer and pressed to vinyl ? It’s harder even when you consider that this recording is not exactly “Aja”, so your hi-fi equipment can only deliver as good as the source used for the pressing. The bonus tracks are forgettable but I guess if that triggered the buy, then it’s a smart move. I sold it before it’s presence was deemed unclean by Discogs.
- In case someone needs more info about this record (apart of what is noted in the description), just let me know - pretty cool item all over
- i wouldnt be surprised if this edition wasnt even japanese and someone just put japanese on it because it looks "cool"
- I've had this copy for several years. It plays perfectly, sounds great, and is likely better than other pressings simply because Japan usually does vinyl right!
- Edited 2 years agoThis is honestly a phenomenal pressing, official or not. Surface noise is quiet and only particularly noticeable in between tracks. The sound is dynamic and really fills the whole room, especially at higher volumes (luckily it's very, very crankable with no audible distortion).
The elephant in the room is the tracklist, which oddly splits the final two tracks of the original LP onto the C side of disc 2. It's strange, but--possibly unintentionally--quite clever. What You Want and Soon are significantly louder tracks than Blown A Wish, and inner groove distortion would've been more likely with either of those towards the end of a side. Blown A Wish has no distortion, and the final two tracks sound excellent on Side C. It's a tiny annoyance having to swap discs just for the final two tracks, but as far as flaws go, it's a minor one.
The two discs come in cheap, crappy white sleeves, so they're prone to be quite dusty straight out of the package. My copy has some pops and clicks early on Side A that I've largely reduced with a surface cleaning and a couple playthroughs, and I'm pretty sure I can eliminate the rest with a deeper cleaning.
I've seen a few comments about off-center pressings. I haven't noticed anything off about mine, but it's also an album that would conceal that well. If it is off-center, it doesn't bother me enough to look too far into it. I'm sure this varies a bit from copy to copy considering it's an unofficial pressing.
I can't really speak to the quality of any of the "bonus" tracks, as I've really just been listening to the original album on repeat since I got my copy. I don't particularly care about their presence; I came for Loveless, and this is a very good version of Loveless. The fact that there's anything else here is just gravy, regardless of quality. If you're not keen on shelling out more than $300 for a high quality copy of the 2018 reissue or waiting until 20XX for another reissue, a copy of this pressing will more than suffice. I can't do a direct comparison, obviously, but I have a hard time seeing all that much room for improvement short of a true pure analog rerelease (and even that would mostly be "different" rather than objectively better).
I know pirating/bootlegging is a touchy subject, but I'm honestly grateful for whoever put so much love into this pressing. I'd love an "official" pressing personally approved by Kevin Shields, but until that's accessible to those of us who can't justify more than $300 for a single record that could suddenly be reissued at any moment, I fully support and thank whoever made this version for increasing public access to such a beautiful and important album.
