Red House Painters III was to be a defining moment! The rollercoaster album having hit a height that many double vinyls aspire to but never quite reach. On hearing the first two tracks it had a tension and a dark disquiet that was uneasy feeling and yet alluring at the same time. But once track three began the glass was shattered and we were thrown from the dream! Who on earth had the final say on tracks I have no idea but this is up there with the worst cover version ever. Uncle Joe and New Jersey build the dreams again but the horror of 'I am a rock' remains. Over the entire catalogue RHP III is the lp that hurts bad since in my opinion if this track three had been omitted or replaced with something else it could have been a worthy follow up to previous impressive work....but I guess at some point every artist makes an aesthetic foot wrong! Ultimately, the rollercoaster retained it's hue of untainted and unrivalled perfection. Mark kozelek has shown over time that he can write covers better sometimes than the originals so he has indeed compensated for this track many times over!
