Notes
Comes in a 12x12x0.75" box as 3 double CDs, to imitate the original vinyl release of 3 double LPs, with a copy of the original "Handbook" written by Harry Smith and a "Booklet of Essays, Appreciations and Annotations Pertaining to the Anthology Of American Folk Music" which contains information on the artists, the origins of the songs, their discographies and other versions of the songs.
The Enhanced CD (CD 6) includes interviews with some of the artists or their relatives, videos and pictures of Harry Smith's various other collections. It also includes a video of Harry Smith receiving a Grammy award. (Note: The "Enhanced" interactive interfaces were designed for 1997 Windows and Mac "classic" [System 7.1, QT 2.5] operating systems. DXR files also required a Macromedia Director-based app. As of 2023, they will not run with ease on most modern Macs or PCs, though some individual Quicktime files may be readable on some modern Macs, by accessing the folders.)
Track positions are from 1 to 84 on the release.

Catalog number on "Volume One: Ballads" is FP 251.
Catalog number on "Volume Two: Social Music" is FP 252.

Reviews
- Edited 5 months agoThis Smithsonian Folkways CD box is a treasure! Beautifully packaged, it includes an extra book of wonderful essays and notes in addition to including Harry Smith’s original booklet of notes (which is a work of art itself). You are not going to find better, more faithful sound quality than what Smithsonian has presented here. A taste of true Americana, and an absolute joy from start to finish. Buy one for yourself, and buy extra to give as gifts to kids, grandma etc. This is music begging to be shared. (Also excellent on long road trips.)
- Guess this has never gone out of print because you can buy it new at Folkways website for 70 something. Or was it reissued?
