Great album with an all star team of jazz-funk cats. The melancholic theme and returning melody in "Amaroso" is one of my favourite lp parts. Especially when it starts again around 3:11 minutes, with the warm keyboard tones by Herbie Hancock, together with Henderson's solo and muted trumpet wailings. Excellent solo in the mix there as well by saxophonist Bennie Maupin, who composed the track. And Paul Jackson backs it up with solid bass fills.

Right after "Amaroso" has faded away, enters the inspirational title track "Mahal". Then followed by the mellow mood of "Ecstasy", which closes the journey of this recording peacefully. An enjoyable trip.

I think this is one of the best Eddie Henderson's albums. Diverse and enjoyable from the beginning to the end. Jazz-funk lovers will find here beautiful tracks like "Butterfly" and "Cyclops", and ones that are looking for more smooth, melodic and pop-jazz oriented sound will enjoy the beauty of "Emotions" and "Mahal". Some disco influences are noticeable as well. Overall, very recommendable for jazz-funk lovers. This is one of my favorite jazz-funk albums from late 70s.
