Reviews
- This release displays one of the more free jazz-oriented sets of John Coltrane with his classic quartet, before he went on to play even more free and looser renditions and compositions with Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and Rashied Ali. On the surface, the audio is of noticeably low quality. The recording here is very resembling of the Olatunji Concert release from 2001 in terms of sound fidelity (albeit not as extreme lol).
Tracks 1-4 are loud and suffer from some sound distortion, while tracks 5-8 are much more toned down and muffled. However, once you really listen and look deeper into the music artisty of John Coltrane and his quartet, you won’t even care about how poor the sound quality is.
This has an great array of song selections John Coltrane chose to play for the people of France. Here, he plays one of the best renditions of “My Favorite Things,” which shows Coltrane’s amazing vocal technique on the saxophone. It’s not the most free jazz oriented version of “My Favorite Things,” but he still incorporates bursts of unconstrained cord changes. The album also includes the track “Blue Valse,” which is just an early version of the free jazz behemoth “Ascension.” It’s great to be able to listen to Coltrane’s vision of “Ascension” that he had in 1965, as well as the fact that we get the full performances from both days.
If you have an appreciation for John Coltrane’s early material, as well as his later free jazz/avant-garde jazz releases, then you’ll admire the transitionary aspects of these songs.
