Catalog numbers appear in run-out grooves as follows: NSC-1 (with hyphen), NSC-2 (with hyphen), NSC 3 (without hyphen), NSC 4 (without hyphen).

"UR-046" released exclusively on NSC. Another edit of the track appeared on Soulsaver / E.R.P - Enhanced Rhythm Perception.

this compilation is a great showcase of some of Detroit's finest talents, collected together by another Detroit legend that was Ron Murphy (RIP). Shake and UR tracks are incredible, as expected. i personally think that NSC Tracker is Shake's best effort so far, and UR-046 is great example of intergalactic hi-tech funk that UR is known for (sadly, their recent output is not quite up to the standards of their earlier releases). but, like i said, the quality of these track is obvious. so i would like focus on NSC-4. this is a very unusual track. the music is done in recognizable Saunderson style, with trade mark synth stabs, and some additional guitar licks. the vocals are a story on their own. done by Jazezta Thompson (i don't know if she did anything else besides this track), they are all over the place, sang in the key of i don't give a f**k. they sound like they were done independently, and later stitched onto the music. but somehow, it works! it is a wonderfully weird tune, and it works!! this is a real feel good, party tune, that puts a smile on my face every time i hear it. Saunderson has collaborated with great vocalists (Paris Grey and his wife Ann), so the selection of a vocalist for this tune comes as a surprise, but a track as a whole has this strange feeling to it that makes it an absolute gem! crude gem, but still a gem!

this double pack is still relatively easy to find (even new), and for a very reasonable price, so i sincerely suggest not to miss it.

When I bought this copy I noticed there was a blue coloured DIN A4 paper with a written story in the plastic bag. For record owners who don't have this story or people who are interested in histery of detroit techno, I must tell what is written on this paper:

The NSC STORY

"In 1989 two businessman, Steve Martel and Ron Murphy decided to open a store specializing in old phonograph records. Located at 17610 W. Warren in Detroit, Michigan, it was decided to name the business 'National Sound Corporation'. In a room at the back of the store they put in some record cutting equipment with the idea of cutting dubs and records for the customers jukeboxes.

Shortly after opening the store Derrick May and Juan Atkins came in looking for records and noticed the cutting lathe and saked about making some acetates. After cutting a couple of dubs Derrick and Juan told Ron that there was a lot of producers that needed a place in Detroit to cut dubs and masters. After cutting those dubs Ron decided to upgrade the equipment with Derrick and Juan getting the word out about the cutting service. The first master to be cut was for the new 'Plus 8' label (8001), a week later the first 'Underground Resistance' master was cut (UR 001). From those first masters nearly 10 years ago there have been thousands of other masters cut, all inscribed with the initials NSC. Ron encouraged the producers to make their records unique by writing phases and information onto the records, talking Kevin Saunderson into cutting one of his records in reverse and cutting one groove loops for the Jeff Mills 'Rings Of Saturn' project.

In 1994 Steve Martel died, the retail part of the business had already been closed down due to an increase in the recording service part of the business. Due to problems with the estate of Steve Martel Ron purchased the equipment and moved it to a new location under the new name 'Sound Enterprises', however Ron decided to continue to put the old NSC logo on each master in memory of his original partner whom without the business would have never been started.

The first 4 sides of this NSC label series is an attempt to combine the world's best producers and artists on one compilation label using a colourful style pressing. I would like to thank Anthony 'Shake' Shakir for getting this series started with his incredible efford on 'NSC tracker', also many many thanks to Mike Banks and the Underground Resistance crew for turning over the master for 'UR 046' so it could be issued on this 2 records set, and also thanks to Kevin Saunderson for allowing one of his old tracks to be used as well. For the art work on these picture discs much thanks to Alan Oldham for his drawing used on NSC-side 2, NSC-side 4 shows an actual advertisement (enlarged) as it appeared in some 1959 comic books, as a 12 year old I ordered one of those (plastic horns) and began to learn how to cut records. After nearly 40 years I still enjoy cutting records and feel fortunate that I'm lucky enough to do it everyday for a great group of producers and artists."
