FREE AS THE MORNING SUN, Mr. Hermano’s second album, shows a slightly new direction for them. The title track, “Free as the Morning Sun” (actually a Santana cover) is like a Sunday service jazz jam, complete with the chorus (a sound later echoed in “Leave Me on a High.” “Capoeira Love Affair” is so slick that it should be used in place of lubricant. There’s also a pronounced emphasis on the more jazzy side of things: “Suco” and “Moresque” demonstrate this amply. The two-part “Jugando Con Fuego” moves seamlessly from a downtempo meditation to a Latin floorkicker. But for the lounge-oriented, “Comu Um Sol” is more your speed. The Latin elements here are more integrated into the music itself, leading for a strong album overall.
