- Edited 9 months agoReally good album which was the last from the “proggy” Genesis. Production could have been far better though. I find it a bit ironic though that this, the first album without Hackett, has the guitars very high in the mix. Hackett’s guitar work was virtually inaudible on some of the earlier stuff and drowned out by keyboards. It’s a bit of a middle finger if you ask me.
- The recording studio in Holland was probably a mistake to cause poor dynamics in the final scene.. However, the UK first press helps to make up for this deficiency by increasing the volume enough.
- One of my favourite Genesis albums. Snowbound in particular is an epic slice of chilly, ethereal pop. Ive never heard a mind-blowing version of the album though. It’s very dense and I would imagine have been hard work to mix. This sounds fine, don’t get me wrong, but the other Genesis albums I’ve got (SEBTP, Lamb, Trick and Duke) feel a lot easier on my ears, especially through headphones.
So yeah, sounds ok. Don’t expect Aja. - This pressing is a little bit better than the awful 1978 Scandinavian (ncb) pressing. And Collins' vocal has a bit more room sound to it (reverb) than on the 2018 Showell reissue. So far the 2018 reissue wins.
- there is some really good songs on this album, would say its the last good genesis album, just dont go into it expecting a 5 star masterpiece like the last seven albums that proceeded it.
- I feel that this record was the best of the first three with Phil Collins at the helm and Tony Banks' writing is very strong here as he probably contributes most among the three members left in the band. Although Phil had not completely found his own singing style at the stage, I thought he sung very well throughout! I rate this among the best three post Peter Gabriel albums by Genesis.
- Edited 4 years agoFrom my pov, the first three post-Gabriel records are Genesis at their peak, especially W&W and this one. Sure, some songs might be rather cheesy. Nonetheless, the Progsongs are as adventerous as ever while at the same time much more accessible and catchy. Down and Out and The Lady Lies are highlights here! Overall, a very underrated record.
- The Album Genesis fans love to hate. However, after losing 2 key members, they more than proved that they could carry on as a great band of songwriters & performers.
One of my favorite songs of theirs is on here, "Undertow". Hardly gets mentioned, and I don't recall Genesis performing it live.
