It's simply one of the most famous reggae songs in the world! The riddim produced by Studio 1 was originally used by Al Campbell (a homonym of the one who will know the success in the 80s) with his track Take a Ride, he would have made 2 more songs at Studio 1 before disappearing again in the nature. It is on his return to Jamaica, after having lived a few years in Canada, that Coxsone proposes this riddim to Johnny Osbourne who revisits a bunch of old Studio 1 riddims and composes what many of his fans consider to be his best album. The text calls us to live as we should in accordance with what is true and right, "truth and rights". A text very much inspired by the Bible as we can see.
Note that even those who do not know reggae in France know the riddim because it was brought up to date by the Neg Marrons and their hit "Le Bilan". (Jacky & Ben-J (2) - Le Bilan)
NDT: - "When you think it's peace and safety it could be a sudden destruction
is a reference to the Bible prophecy Thessalonians 5:1-5
- Render your heart and not your garments" Joel 2:13
It was a Jewish custom to tear one's clothes as a sign of anger or sadness or strong emotion. This passage is about sin and enjoins believers not to tear their clothes but to tear their hearts, in other words not to make an outward show of repentance but rather an inward show that is more true. - Truth and rights side is an instrumental, from the Youths A So Cold release. Really solid production.
