A rocker, a mainstream singer, as well as a singer of Oscar-winning and classic pieces by George Gershwin, a true musical star... One would be hard pressed indeed to find a Czech singer as versatile as Petra Janů. Her rock beginnings in the 1970s unsettled the official Czech music scene and although she was not frequently shown on TV or heard on the radio, her concerts were packed out. In the 1980s, she spontaneously transformed into an excellent representative of “pop for adults” and became one of the most popular Czech singers. She has received three prestigious Golden Nightingale award and sold almost two million discs.

The 2-CD set “Já jsem, jaká jsem” (I Am what I Am) maps in detail the singer’s illustrious career. Whereas the first disc presents Petra Janů in full rock mode (this period is documented by songs from the albums Motorest, Exploduj and Jámy, as well as her duets with Petr Janda from the albums Jedeme dál and Jedeme dál II, and Michael Kocáb’s previously unreleased song Dávat brát a žít), the second disc is dominated by Petra Janů as the Queen of Pop with an array of unforgettable hits (Moje malá premiéra, Už nejsem volná, Říkej mi, S láskou má svět naději, A pak že je to hřích, etc.). The new Supraphon Petra Janů 2-CD set also contains a (brand-new) bonus recording. The song “Já jsem, jaká jsem” (I Am what I Am), to Michael Prostějovský’s autobiographical Czech lyrics, was chosen by Petra from the musical La Cage aux folles and the repertoire of the disco queen Gloria Gaynor.

From a Rock view this double CD is the most recommended of the three compilations by Petra Janu, because the different musical styles she was singing are strictly separated here. So you can enjoy her late 70s early 80s Rock period on CD 1 and simply ignore the Pop songs on CD 2 – although the second CD contains a couple of songs which maybe nevertheless should not be ignored neither…
