This is one of the most unexpected pairings in old school hip hop, Irish alternative chanteuse Sinead O'Connor with hardcore female MC Lyte. (You might remember Sinead appearing on the Grammys that year with the Public Enemy logo on her scalp.) The original "I Want Your (Hands On Me)" appeared sans Lyte on O'Connor's album The Lion & The Cobra, but this 12" single takes the track to a whole new level. The beat is completely surreal, unlike anything else heard from hip-hop at the time. When MC Lyte proclaims, "I'm in the mood for love, simply because you're near me," you know you're in for something incredible. At that point, the beat halts and gears up again in dub style with MC Lyte sending a shout out to Sinead. The blend of O'Connor's vocals with Lyte's rap is unlike anything ever heard in the history of hip-hop. If you haven't heard this track yet, it's time. Then there's that funky electro groove - way ahead of its time. Recommended if you like (or check out) Coldcut, Queen Latifah, Eric B & Rakim, Meat Beat Manifesto, Bel Canto, Bleep, Manufacture, They Can't Sleep.
