Perhaps not as immediately striking as his work with the Yardbirds (the incandescent lead break on 'Shapes of Things') or the Jeff Beck Group (the galloping fantasy of 'Beck's Bolero'), Beck's first solo album is a quietly stunning piece of artistry. It rewards the meditative listener and was, of course, lingeringly influential. From the laid-back funk of 'Constipated Duck' to the drowsy heartbreak of Stevie Wonder's 'Cause We've Ended as Lovers' to the tragic grandeur of the eight-minute 'Diamond Dust,' Beck proves beyond the slightest doubt that it was time for him to leave hard rock behind and blaze a trail through the frontier of jazz fusion. Try to imagine Joe Satriani doing something like 'Echo' in the '80s if "Blow by Blow" had never existed. (No, seriously--try it. Can't be done.)
I have an LP that has the stamps and etchings to be this release, but the label is definitely post-1978. Any ideas the actual release date?
