Of course it sounds, on the one hand, massively dated now... but somehow it's a classy vintage. 1984 New York electro, evoking the nightclubs that Madonna would have frequented at the time. Of course she dated Mr Bean, as we Brits like to call him, hence the "scene" must've been a cosy one.

Jellybean produced Madonna's debut album, and here she repays the favour by contributing "Sidewalk Talk", as writer and backing vocalist.

The U.S. pressing John "Jellybean" Benitez - Wotupski!?! is punchy and clear, a real analogue delight! Instrumental "Was Dog a Doughnut" on Side 2 outstays its welcome slightly (dog barks by Jellybean, apparently) but the closing "The Mexican" is a superb period piece. Again I'm back in that New York nightclub in 1984 :-)

This is an essential album for those of us who collect freestyle or electro, what I would like to know is who sings the song "Dancing On The Fire" (song that India would later sing in 1988) apparently it's Audrey Wheeler

I can't get over how much the vocals in "Sidewalk Talk" sound as if Madonna were singing them herself.

stick with the original Mexican or the other more disco-y version
there's enough Madonna on that track for diehards to want a copy
