The first album of Hash Jar Tempo--which apparently is a play on the 1970s space rock outfit Ash Ra Tempel--is one of the best albums of any genre of the 90s.

The group--which teams up the Philadelphia-based sludge rock band Bardo Bond and New Zealand guitar whiz Roy Montgomery--definitely channels the mystique and raw power found in many of Ash Ra's better albums, but there's more drone-ish qualities present throughout.

It's pretty dense stuff. -- 5/5
