Comprises abridged versions of David Holmes' BBC Radio "Essential Mixes" from 1998 (disc 1) and 2001 (disc 2). Holmes creates a psychedelic soundtrack with simple mixing and a handful of memorable songs (Marlena Shaw's "California Soul", Billy Paul's "East", Plaid's "Scoobs In California", Rare Earth's "I Just Want To Celebrate", the covers of "Higher Ground" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash").

The 1998 mix intersperses late '60s / early '70s psychedelia with '90s break beats: psychedelic pop (Serge Gainsbourg, Ellen McIlwaine), rock (The Edgar Broughton Band), jazz (Howard Blake), sitar (Don Sebesky), funk (James Brown, Googie Reno Combo), soul (Marlena Shaw, Billy Paul) and a kinky telephone conversation (Xaviera Hollander) nestle alongside cut-up breaks (Cut Chemist), psychedelic breaks (David Holmes) and breakbeat (Plaid). ★★★★

The 2001 mix gets even more psychedelic and abstract, with the first two-thirds covering '70s jazz (Percy Faith, 101 Strings) and psychedelic rock (Rare Earth, Ananda Shankar), and the final third comprised of '90s psychedelic breaks (Skylab, David Holmes). Several artists feature twice, several tracks are overplayed (e.g., the massive drum solo on Rare Earth's "Get Ready") and the mix lacks variety. ★★

I love this mix and still count it as one of the best. Hearing this at a young age made be understand for the first time what a dj and a mix could really be! It was one of the most important moments in my musical education.

And yet! Over 20 years later, i do not believe there has been a full complete track listing for this mix! Would anyone be interested in working on filling in all the gaps and naming all the clips used?

Have to call out Jon Savage's liner notes for praise ... creative and informative, especially for a DJ mix, where the notes are usually slapdash or an afterthought. An addition that enhances this well-crafted set.

The Essential Essential mix in my opinion, never fails to amaze on every listen. Check out ' Xavier Hollander - Telephone Conversation' tucked nicely between Brigitte Bardot and Howard Blake!
