This is an essential compilation of M Squared material. Consistently inventive and interesting offerings load each side with highlights. This is not a "best of", these tracks were some out-takes from the singles and other loose ends that needed a home and somehow this makes this compilation even more intriguing. Nearly all of these of the tracks were originally only available on this LP, but they have more recently been reissued on the Terrace Industry M Squared 4 CD Box Set and a handful of tracks also appear on the VOD compilations - Pardon Me For Barging In Like This & Magnetophonics.
There are so many great songs packed into this LP its hard to know where to start - so lets not start at the beginning. Pony Club by The Limp is the album's sweetest moment and Click Click by Pel Mel has them sounding more in their Limp mode so that's a double bonus for fans of The Limp whose recorded output is limited. Nasa Secret Anzac by A Splendid Mess buzzes along at a rather frenetic and enjoyable pace. Pelican by Wild West is another great highlight and due to the Phil & Rae connection it always reminds me of Voigt 465 - along with Wild West they were one of the very best bands to emerge out of the Australian post-punk electronic scene. The only thing wrong with Land of Surrender by Negative Reaction is that it suddenly stops just when you were hoping it could go on forever. Everything that was great about M Squared recordings can be heard in those 4 minutes of brilliance. Zombod by Solipsik (SPK) is perhaps another one of the more interesting moments on the LP and I can't help thinking it should have been chosen for their M Squared single. I remember being slightly underwhelmed by Severed Heads Eat Roland but hey, its a great title. Aural Indifference's take on The Supremes hit Baby Love will certainly not have Diana Ross overly concerned about any missed royalties.
M Squared singles generally trade for high prices so that makes this LP great value for your collecting dollars. Its a collection of songs that i have gone back to many times over the years and it still sounds as good as ever.
