Reviews
- Edited one year agoAlthough Harrison was very busy with the Concert for Bangladesh between the years from All Things Must Pass to Living in the Material World, this was nevertheless a very anticipated studio album, with Harrison establishing in 1970 that he was as worthy of the name "Beatle" as much as Lennon or McCartney. Unlike the principal two, All Things... showed the world that when George was allowed to go off on his own he could bring form and beauty to music in ways no others could. And fortunately for those waiting for his next album, All Things... gave us 3 LPs of music - enough to get them through the next few years before Material World dropped in 1973. It's a more introspective album, focused greatly on his spiritualism and his place in the world of celebrities. It also has a more direct, focused sound, and feels much more like an album from the '70s than the '60s. Everything on it is tight, tight, tight- even the looser bits. It's a terribly well-orchestrated album, and a joy to sit back and get sucked into. As a pop album, it is less "catchy" than All Things..., but here George is trying to tell us more of a story of where he is now. It's way less focused on making radio-friendly hits and instead serves as a musical chapter of his life in that moment. I don't usually care for rock gods singing about their own search for god, but George does it so well and in his own unmistakable way.
- “Living in the Material World” was released in 1973. The album is a stunning statement of faith. Other than “Sue Me Sue You Blues,” every song addresses Harrison’s spirituality. “The Light That Has Lighted the World” speaks to friendships that can be disrupted when one embarks on a spiritual path. The title track rocks with a floating chorus, “From the Spiritual Sky such sweet memories have I; To the Spiritual Sky how I pray – yes I pray – that I won’t get lost or go astray.” The gorgeous “Be Here Now” has the great wisdom, “A mind that wants to wander around a corner is an unwise mind.” Harrison’s weeping guitar is unique; and his passionate vocals quiver with emotion. Enjoy!
