Reviews
- Edited 10 months agoThe first half of this album has the same level of ambition and drama as many of the canonized soul albums (Stevie, Marvin, etc.)
The opening track is a study in "quiet storm" sensibilities. Night time radio, Steely Dan-like elegance, and an arrangement that grows and grows. Sampled to great effect by DJ Rashad!
Her version of "People Make the World Go Round" is one of the best ones. Perhaps some people don't dig Bofill's signature voice.
"Angel of the Night" is charting Minnie Riperton and Patrice Rushen territory. Super catchy chorus!
"Rainbow Child" is a trad ballad, with inflections from whiter genres (country & western-type melodies) yet a solid jazz arrangement.
"What I Wouldn't Do" takes us on a yacht rock tip, you could almost imagine Michael McDonald's bearded barytone cropping up around the bushes.
The last three tunes are less exciting though, that's where the album loses focus. Weird how the A-side is so good but the B-side is quite… meh. - One of the best Album you can find in this Price Range. The Wohle Album is beautiful between Jazz, Disco, Latin and Gospel by a Lady who sings like no Otter. Great playing and production as well
