Reviews
- The 1990’s was hard on many of the classic thrash-era bands, lineups changed, bands were dumped from labels, and many outfits packed up their tents. Overkill, newly independent, and with a new guitar duo shifted their sound toward the new-ish “Groove metal” sound pioneered by Pantera and Machine Head, an experiment that initially brought us the fantastic “The Killing Kind”, bit also this absolute gem.
The second album with Sebastian Marino and Joe Comeau on guitar duties sees the pair much more comfortable than the prior album, more reckless and ambitious. “From the Underground and Below” makes up for thrash speed with sheer heaviness. The riffs here are percussive cannon shots, pounding marches, punk-infused blues, and straight up stompers. This album is an absolutely bludgeoning force, it is musical dark matter, it doesn’t get any heavier.
It’s also immediately identifiable as Overkill, with DD Verni’s trademarked “oil drum” bass tone, and Blitz’s wailing cut with an edge of extra snarl and ferocity.
It might not be the classic thrash of albums like “The Years of Decay”, but it is a bold faced, uncompromisingly heavy album, and one of the very best in Overkill’s huge discography. I’d put it in their top 5, and that’s pretty high praise.
This 2015 pressing from Nuclear Blast is clean, with an awesome sound that packs a huge punch without any distortion or flaws. It’s an amazing pressing.
