By large, a collection mostly desirable due to the amazing double DVD, comprising probably everything Frank Tovey/Fad Gadget ever documented on video. Especially his stunning live at The Hacienda is a must, not to forget the documentary itself - but of course, the secret ingredients guarrantee collectors' satisfaction from those more obscure moments (like the Proyas/Silverstein short film "Neon" that features "Ricky's Hand" to great effect).

The audio counterpart on the other hand is a bit of a repetition - to call it a "cash-cow" would definitely be an insult to Frank Tovey's loving memory (and legacy) as here the audio pieces compiled serve a greater purpose in juxtaposing his early experiments with pieces of more, say-conventional nature - and all this in order to reflect his unquestionable artistic growth. In that respect, the audio side of this retrospective works on a level the songs are not predictably in chronological order (as is the case with Frank's two previous retrospectives - 1986's "The Fad Gadget Singles" and its 2OO1 update "The Best of Fad Gadget" which is horribly mastered btw, falling victim as one of the earliest examples of the "loudness war"). Here, the songs complement eachother from a non-obvious choice-list perspective (the inclusion of "Jump" alone, definitely adds some extra flare to the lot). Of course, if you already collected every original album and one of the two previous compilations (or both), the audio-part of this 4-disc retrospective does prove a bit more frustrating due to lack of more extras that were never before available on CD. 12" singles and many of the b-sides to start with, still lay in vinyl obscurity (and the exploitation of Mkultra's "Foot Binding Trot Mix" version for the second time already is a bit unconvincing, considering there are two more, and just as challenging, if not too hermetical, remixes that never experienced digital transfer). The addition of two never-before released out-takes. "A Place With the Pigs" and "Sleeper" showcase Tovey's fascinating ongoing concern with experimental music in the 90s - "A Place" to some extent echoes Coil's equally frightening "The Pope Held Upside Down", on the other hand it is featuring the same drum machine that was previously heard in Renegade Soundwave's amazing dance experiment called "The Phantom", while the beautiful "Sleeper" can very easily be mistaken for a lost This Mortal Coil track from around their "Filigree And Shadow" era.

Apart from the very videos, die-hard completists will probably consider this lot due to the inclusion of several demos, recorded before (or around the time of) Fad Gadget's very first single/album releases. Despite the charm of these early rough sketches of songs we grew to love forever ("Back To Nature" in particular), the demos are sadly the least interesting part of the whole retrospective, serving a mere documentary purpose - and considering the remaining part of the second disc which is more of a filler (repeating itself with official versions and a rather disappointingly predictable, hype-like "fans' top five" selection - while the exclusion of "Saturday Night Special" for example, is downright unforgivable), the demos are at best a tempter, but the low-fi rush-rehearsal aspect of theirs provides a bit of a disappointment. On the other hand, the inclusion of the closing tribute "Soroguai" by Temple X is an interesting idea and a respectful epitaph in the wake of Tovey's sudden death in 2OO2, but in a way it doesn't really belong here - a far better proposition would have been an extra disc of cover versions and personal tributes to Frank by his label mates and contemporaries (Depeche, Cave, Alison Moyet, Gavin Friday, Marc Almond ,Boyd Rice, to name a few)... But then again, whatever the reasons, this idea was probably under consideration but impossible to reflect.

The overall conclusion is Tovey grew rapidly in artistic terms with every next album and this progress is clearly audible in each of these songs - a symmetric 2x2 disc set is of absolute recommendation but more to caught unawares than those already familiar with his work. Of course, as said earlier here, the DVD part of the set is a much greater reason for anyone in love with Frank's work to buy the whole, but the audio story is sadly compromised by including too much of what we already have and love and know (and eventually grew tired of). Maybe the commercial aspect of compiling what might be more appealing to fans and the like, compromised the lot from being more extravagant, but considering the fact Frank Tovey never really felt like a commercial icon but a cult one, "Fad Gadget By Frank Tovey" could have been a far nastier (read: representative) "puzzle box" from what it officially turned out as.
