Relentless as it skips along...No quiet moments but it's a "clean Free Jazz" performance where they don't just blast away in one loud, conjoined mass which hampers much of this Style. Excellent sound recording. Highly recommended.
Are you interested, curious about Braxton, but need a place to start? Seek this one out. It absolutely smokes, and is also a nice summation of a little of Braxton's early interests.
The band, one of his best, is Dave Holland (who was playing with Miles Davis just a few years earlier), Barry Altschul, and a young George Lewis on trombone. George plays the charts like he had been doing so all his life, though he may have been sightreading some of them onstage! Yoiks.
The performances are passionate and will interest anyone with an ear for modern (or post-modern) jazz. There's some post-bop, free swing, even a circus march. Don't miss it!
