The Durutti Column – The Return Of The Durutti Column

Remember when this came out. The whole LP is absolutely brilliant. Cracker of an album. Beats me why there isn't more music of this level produced today.

I have an interesting copy given to me by Steve Hopkins (Invisible Girls) and friend of Vini and Martin - indeed they played in bands together. Steve was often in the studio with Vini and this copy was one of the original pressings in a white cardboard sleeve before the sandpaper was stuck on! The sleeve is signed to Steve by Vini and Alan Wise (Factory Records Svengali). Matrix numbers are A side - FACT 14 4 PBG A1 F̶A̶C̶T̶ ̶1̶4̶ ̶A̶1̶ SOUND CLINIC EG S-4 B side - FACT 1̶4̶ ̶B̶1̶ 14 PBG B1 EG S-2

I have had a copy since 1982. This has the title in silver with identical layout/spacing to the black paint version. Is it likely to be a fake?

"Beginning" is the 1:37 track B1 of the first and third UK pressing, shifted as track 5 in the second pressing.
Track B1 of the second pressing, lasting 2:37, is an "Untitled" track.
This is the original side 2 tracklist of first and third pressing:

This is the tracklist of the second UK pressing (maybe a wrong matrix?) used also for some foreign editions (ie Italy and Japan):

B6. In 'D' 2:26
From the Factory Benelux page: "This new 2014 edition on Factory Benelux includes the 9 tracks included on the first Factory pressing, as well as all six 6 tracks which formed side two of the rare second pressing (tracks 14 to 19)."

"In 'D'" is actually a different mix of "Sketch For Winter", and the label of side 2 is the same for both pressing.
All this has produced a total confusion about the real titles of some tracks, both in LP and CD reprints, reissues, remasters...

AAARRRGGHHH!
I've seen that the vinyl edition published by Factory Benelux, give the title "Beginning" to the track named "Untitled" in the CD!

While in the CD "Beginning" is the short track B1 of the first and third original vinyl pressings.
The nightmare continue... :-(

The Italian edition has 10 tracks, featuring a new (untitled) track as B1 and durations of 1:37 for Beginning and 2:25 for In 'D' (= Sketch For Winter (Version)) but only In 'D' is credited.

Like nothing that could have been anticipated this album captures the essence of something that falls outside of rock or jazz. It's its own thing and I can still listen to it 30 years later without any loss of integrity to the original musical ideas and spirit that Vini and Martin laid down. If they gave me one album to play during my last meal this would be it.

Beautiful limpid electric guitar work, mostly single note runs rather than chordal. Little bit of jazz guitar and brazillian bossa influence, Vini must have heard Bola Sete before this. Well accented with effects such as echoplex and reverb, good production by Hannett which adds just enough to colour the sound and lifts it above being just another pleasant solo guitar record.
