25th Anniversary Record Store Day Exclusive. 420 Green vinyl out of the lot were randomly distributed to indie shops. The remainder are on black vinyl (this).
A nice piece of history if you’re a Sublime fan . But this record is essentially 40 Oz to freedom. Wish this included some of their more rarer tracks like “New Realization” and “Romeo”. Probably better off getting 40 oz to freedom
**This was the demo sold out of the trunk of the band's car, so that explains why a certain song doesn't have the solo or production changes which exist on the full length they appear on.**
I wasn't sure what we were going to hear since these were demo tunes, but the audio quality is incredible. I was pleasantly surprised at the fullness of the sounds and tones, and all 10 songs feature the polish you'd expect from a full release. The horns sound bright, the vocals are well-balanced and the bass is able to groove and drive the songs without any pieces being lost in their complexity.
At first listen, I found Badfish and Date Rape to be refreshing, possibly better, versions of what we got from the full studio releases. It's tough to qualify something as "better," though, so let's just say I possibly prefer them.
I received a black copy, like the majority of those who purchased it, so I don't know how the 420 Green versiong play in comparison. My copy, unfortunately, had very noticeable swirls of small scratches on Side B, although I did not notice an affect on how the vinyl played.
This, for me, was a 5-star listen, and after a few more chances to listen with a beer or two in my hand, I'll update with some song impressions and more details as they arise.
If you missed out on this at Record Store Day, and can pick it up without too much inflation on eBay, don't second guess it. I've always enjoyed Sublime, but they certainly aren't my favorite band -- this is a must-own for my collection.
Sounds pretty great. Not as good as the 40 oz version but still a nice treat for collectors. D.J.'s sounds a bit low pitched compared to the 40 oz version but it's cool.
