Did Scott Walker realise that he would never look back when he started recording Climate of Hunter, upon the path he had left behind on The Walker Brother's last album Nite Flights?

Walker had become one of the most popular artists in Britain of the mid- to late 1960s. Hell, he even had his own TV-show! How popular can you get? And though The Walker Brother's records had teenage girls swooning over them, Scott's solo albums of the time told a different story altogether. Musically he didn't stray all too far from the baroque pop of his bread and butter band, but the subject matter of his lyrics were far more morose and subversive than The Walker Brothers ever could be.

In the early 1970s Walker went solo, but a period of heavy drinking and subpar musical outings led to a reunion of his former band, which came to an end with 1978's Nite Flights, an album where each member was responsible for their own individual songs. Scott's sound for the rest of his career was born there.

Climate of Hunter was Walker's first solo outing in this new style. Sure, it has touches of eighties production and sound making it perhaps his most lush post Walker Brothers album, but it is certainly a continuation of what he had begun to do on Nite Flights. Maybe Climate of Hunter isn't quite as essential as what came after, but i don't think it is negligible either and because it is somewhat of an anomaly in his discography i wish it wasn't so damn short!
