Reviews
- Edited 2 years agoCritically regarded as a masterpiece from the 90s. Johnny Cash extracted new meaning from Hurt which would shock anyone unfamiliar with the original in this drug fuelled concept album documenting one man’s descent into madness (and ultimately suicide). It’s aged really well. It is uncompromising and alongside The Fragile is possibly one of NIN’s finest works. It certainly pushed them into the limelight
It begins with the sound of a man being repeatedly beaten by a prison guard. Ouch! It’s a pretty visceral opening to a sometimes anthemic, screeching, haunting and atmospheric... and amazingly produced album.
Trent Reznor recorded in said place ( 10050 Cielo Drive ) which - by his own admission from meeting Sharon Tate’s sister - was an indulgent and insensitive idea.
Footnote - around the same period NIN recorded an amazing cover of Joy Division’s Dead Souls.
