- Quick comment, just received a sealed copy of this box set. Listened to Ole Coltrane first. WOW, it sounds way better than the stereo version from Heavyweight Champion. Very impressed. Also the actual vinyl is very clean, flat, quiet. yay!
- Edited 2 years agoI picked this up used/NM from my local store. What a GREAT box set this is. I've listened to the Legacy lp and Giant Steps and I am loving this! Giant Steps is a repeat for me from a stereo reissue that I thought was very good. Listening to Ole right now and it's tremendous. The Mono for me....wow I like it a LOT better. Ole is also a repeat for me (of the just recently purchased SYEOR 2023 reissue). I am still torn as to if I should keep my stereo Giant Steps and Ole. For now I will hold on to the them but I may trade in to my local store at some point. Again, this is a fantastic set!
- This is a phenomenal sounding box set; even the bonus discs sound great. This mono copy of The Avant-Garde absolutely smokes my 70s stereo copy. Soundwise it measures up to the ORG AAA Bernie cuts. I feel this is a great compliment to the ORG stereo versions.
- This is a wonderful set. Sounds incredible. Beautiful glossy jackets. I love that it came with a 7” of “My Favorite Things” I’ve been wanting a copy for my jukebox, but didn’t want to pay the high price. Now I have a mint copy. My only complaint is that it comes with paper inner sleeves and the bonus disc doesn’t even have an inner sleeve. Come on Rhino, what gives?
- If anyone knows the answer - I’m interested to understand whether these records would have been pressed with a true mono signal (with mono playback in mind) or whether they would be created with the more common modern stereo cartridges in mind and as such there won’t be any performance issues when playing these back with a stereo set up.
I hope that makes sense – it’s just I’ve read people recommending mono switches or a mono cartridge but it just feels a bit extreme for a modern pressing like this (surely these will have been designed to play fine in mono with a Stereo setup?)…thanks! - John Coltrane – The Atlantic Years – In Mono - LP: Looks very good, sounds very good. But why on earth are the records in plain paper inner sleeves? Shame for the money.
