- Spent the night on Steve Hoffman forums and spun my A1/B1matrix variant of this German1st.Been listening to and split run testing it for 32y now,and still find it second to none.Still there's an Elephant in the room,I'm aware of that-the much raved about US1st.
With the multitude of opinions in the forums still in mind I'd put it this way: at a certain level of sonic performance it becomes a matter of personal preference.
And for some music lovers an immensely important parameter is the bass performance. Here my US1st undoubtedly delivers;this kind of music has to,as a user put it,kick you in the groin. That is not my approach.
To me an audiophile recording is about depth of image, overall tonal balance and yes, dynamics. But I'm not willing to trade in musicality for the feeling of being run over by a truck. And that's what the US pressing does- not my cup of tea.
The German1st on the other hand has punch and attack, good sound stage and separation while still keeping some balance across the frequency range.
To wrap it up- if you have this version and are still pining for an alleged Holy Grail that's rumored to be out there: Don't- you're probably gonna spend heck of a lot of money and may still be painfully underwhelmed. - Just got this one today, cleaned and playing for the 2nd time. Fantastic record and outstanding pressing!
- I'm not some sort of music nerd or audiophile but I know an outstanding pressing when I hear one and this is most definitely it. I've always preferred pearl jams ten but after hearing this I don't know. The clarity of the instruments and Kurt's voice is unbelievable. Everyone needs this pressing.....buy with absolute assurance you are getting the best sounding album you probably will ever hear.
- Edited 8 months agoI have the German Sonopress first issue of this album bought back in '91, A1 B1 matrix and it sounds amazing. I've never heard the original US press which goes for crazy money but it's hard to believe it's any better than this. If you can grab a copy do, you won't be disappointed.
- Edited 11 months agoThis is the best pressing of Nevermind you can get, worth every penny! I never heard this album sound so much good! All the instruments shine and Kurt's vocals are outstanding! No distortions, no crackles, pure hi-fi vinyl.
Before buying it, beware of checking if it's made in Germany or in France, German vinyl is miles better than French one. - Stumbled across a copy of this in the wild recently and I have to echo what others are saying. This is one of the best sounding pressings of any albums I own.
- I've listened to this pressing a few times, and it really is incredible how good it sounds. Much cheaper than the original US pressing too
- Edited 2 years agoi think this is the best sounding pressing! go for it! it's perfect!!! amazed with the dynamics
- Having owned this original Sonospress pressing for 30 years(!) I can draw two conclusions: 1) the music, mastering & pressing for this version is still phenomenally good and 2) I am old...
NOTE: The 'hidden' track 'Endless Nameless' is missing from this first pressing only to be installed at the bands' insistence on all future pressings.
