Reviews
- A super all-round tribal future jazz release, with nods to pop in "Now or Never" and the title track. File next to The Cinematic Orchestra.
This kind of craftmanship deserved to be a big hit at the time of release, yet now even the vinyl sells for just a couple of quid !? - Edited 3 years agoMy copy stayed sealed for 20 years, guess the packaging of this one doesn't really deliver a good idea of what's inside. Music itself is strong enough, however: literally gave this one a chance because of 'Let the Sun Cheyenne' (still such a cute piece of music to my ears), and the rest of the material feels like a less-immediate Black Jazz Chronicles (project Marc Woolford was a part of); that is, techno-inspired rhythms with lots of tribal percussion, only with a pop-ish, chill out feel to the vocal tunes and not without its surprise hip hop and jazz moments, which not always feel cohesive (check the midsection of "Shango Prayer"). "East Side Story" sounds like something straight from a Ballistic Brothers record.
Overall 'weird shit' (as the artist himself puts it in the liner notes) indeed, but definitely worth a close inspection. Closer "Space and Time" is another hidden beauty on this, but it gets a more straightforward treatment (that is, it doesn't end in a damn cliffhanger) by Restless Soul in the Soul Drummers - Space And Time EP, dont forget to check that one out. (Whole album became available on Youtube for free little time after i ordered my copy: the silly things in life...)
