Reviews
- My copy was not so warped, thankfully. There is the occasional crackle and minor pop, but all things considered, the imperfections are present but not in the foreground. They're only distracting in the silent moments.
Love the packaging. Can't wait for Fire Walk With Me, a soundtrack that I consider to be superior to that of Twin Peaks, if not as legendary. - oh wow, waited so long to receive my copy and from the outside i'm very pleased i have to say, great looking record.
however it's by far the worst pressing i ever bought, pops and clicks all over the record, and what insane loud pops!
jesus christ, i'm quite dissapointed but that's what happens if you make crappy/cheap pressings and focus more on the artwork... - That's one piss poor looking cup of coffee. I'd have gone with black vinyl with an extremely dark brown or grey swirl, almost invisible on the black... but hey, that's just how I like my coffee, no big deal. Otherwise, I'm happy with my pressing, the music sounds wonderful, a bit of pops here and there - on the b-side it gets a bit excessive for maybe a minute but then it's tolerable again. My copy is only very slightly warped, I can live with that. What's up with the top side obi-strip? That crap is going in the garbage. And does the spine printing need to be damn near invisible? I don't get it. And as much as I appreciate Angelo Badalamenti, I bought the soundtrack as piece of nostalgia, memorabilia from the show - would have loved a gatefold with a scene from the show on it, or at least something a little more directly linked to the experience of watching it. All that said, I am happy with the end product, I just think they could have done a better job at just about every turn.
- Edited 7 years agoAfter originally wanting this back around the end of October, I was told that the copies were all sold and that I'd have to wait until the start of December for the repress.
Well, I guess they got the repress done a bit sooner than expected because my copy has arrived.
Here are my thoughts, which should help people wanting to know if the issues with the initial pressing have been fixed:
First things first, the visual aspect. The outer sleeve & gatefold are of course identical to the initial press. No damage to the die-cut outer sleeve*. Kinda seems weird to have a deluxe gatefold inner sleeve with literally nothing in it apart from the vinyl though. An insert or print card would have been nice.
The vinyl itself is still that "coffee" brown that has split opinions. As people have said, Special Agent Cooper takes his coffee as black as midnight on a moonless night so it's actually a shame they didn't go for a "special" (but obviously just plain) black pressing.
The labels are clean and free of any bubbling etc. The center hole is clean cut. The vinyl is totally flat, no warping at all.
The sound quality is superb. A deep and rich sound with pronounced dynamics. I'm using an Audio Technica AT-LP1240 direct drive turntable with a Nagaoka MP-110 stylus, powered by a Marantz 2220B receiver through a cute little pair of Precision HD4 Bookshelf speakers. So not exactly a high end setup at all, but still this LP sounds amazing.
As far as surface noise, ticks, pops etc go, I have to say that I am thoroughly happy. The occasional little pop of static, which obviously will disappear after a few plays.
Well, there you go. Unless I have been incredibly lucky, it looks like this repress (released end of November 2016) has resolved all previous issues.
*Regarding the die-cut outer sleeve, you are advised to keep the shrinkwrap on. This is one thick item, which will not fit normal 3rd party protective sleeves. Not only does this protect the delicate pattern, but it keeps that damn obi in place too. - I imagine the negative reviews are unfortunate living failures because my copy is by far one of the best sounding records that I own. I can't hear any surface noise, no clicks or pops, sounds lush and the dynamics are very accounted for! I would recommend this completely :)
- Pleased with my copy. No noise, clicks. Good sound AND an extra track that isn't even mentioned!! Covers shit but the vinyl is great.
- I can't comment on the pressing, and we all know that the music is pretty great already, but what shitty sleeve art and horrible looking piece of vinyl. If anyone presented me with a 'damn fine' cup of coffee anything like that colour they'd be wearing it.
If you're going to release something as a redundant piece of ephemera/artefact (delete as you choose), at least make it nice a nice one.
