Reviews
- Edited 11 months agoMaybe this album was too popular for their artists. Part of that maximalist pop attitude that verged on electronica like Grizzly Bear or Yeasayer (all related to a vibe that Animal Collective dominated), Menomena got here an end-of-the-world mood that makes all the songs sound fragile and unstable, while never stopping being pretty and catchy. There are many moments here that I thought "this is where 90s trip hop should have evolved to".
Of all the dubby horn heavy songs, my favourite is the fantastic one-two of Boyscout'n and Evil Bee, all songs sang by the whole audience during their lives (where they always got a bit lost in the rhythm pace but hey) - Amongst a sea of forgettable indie rock bands invading blogs and online publications Menomena is one of the few worth checking out. Each song has a completely different dynamic and each of the three members take turns on the different songs. There is a lot wierd sampling, catchy hooks, thoughful lyrics, and clever uses of synths and saxophones amongst the typical drum, guitar, and bass setup. It was also recorded using Max derived software that ensured all the members contributed what they wanted musically.
Plus, if anything else, the CD sleeve is one of the most clever and uniquely designed you'll see from a regular release of any artist.
