If Jimmie Rodgers is the Father of Country Music, then Uncle Dave Macon is surely the Grandfather. He brought dozens old folk songs, vaudeville songs, blues, gospel songs, and comedy songs into the Twentieth Century. He was one of the first country stars to record, the first star of the Grand Ole Opry, and one of the first members elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Above all, he was an entertainer supreme, and one of the most accomplished banjoists in history.
Here for the first time are all his commercial recordings, as well as several test pressings, rare home recordings, and an entire side of recently discovered Opry air checks from 1939-1940 that have never been released. The sound of these 248 ageless classics has been digitally enhanced without damaging their integrity or purity. Mastering was done by Grammy-winning Chris King, and the final preparation by Jurgen Crasser.
The DVD contains the 1940 film 'Grand Ole Opry' that features Macon. The 176-page hardcover book contains newly discovered photos and illustrations, complete song lyrics transcribed by Paul Ritscher and Robert Nobley, a newly researched biography by Charles Wolfe, and a revised discography by Ralph Rinzler, Norm Cohen and Tony Russell.
