Reviews
- Jamie Lidell moves from Warp onto his own label, Jajulin, for BUILDING A BEGINNING. And the title track wastes no time in jumping feet first into the soul, before "Julian" brings up the energy some. "How Did I Live Before Your Love" has a slinky feel, augmented by the wah-wah guitar, while "Walk Right Back" is more crisp. Interestingly, Lidell moves away, for the most part, from the electronics and studio trickery that marked his albums on Warp for a more live feel, echoing classic 60s soul. But the filtered horns and layered vocals on "I Stay Inside" show he's not going to be purist about it. Die-hard romantics will perhaps go straight for "I Live to Make Your Smile" and "Find It Hard to Say" for their make-out sessions, but could also go towards the spare "In Love and Alone" or the gospel-inspired "Motionless." A harp finds its way onto "Precious Years" but "Don't Let Me Let You Go" ends the album with a light bounce. I hope this is only the beginning to more music!
