After Club Rectum
Music, like poetry, occupies itself a great deal with jealousy. Since this state of emotion is a combination of seven passions, namely, mistrust, desire, revenge, sadness, fear, and shame, which go along with the main emotion, burning love, one can easily see why it gives rise to so many musical kinds of invention. All of these, in accordance with nature, must aim at restlessness, vexation, anger and mournfulness.
Music is a science which ought to have certain rules; these rules ought to be derived from a self-evident principle; and this principle can scarcely be known to us without the help of mathematics. We shall therefore borrow all our Rules for the Finishing our Proportions, from the Musicians, who are the greatest Masters of this Sort of Numbers, and from those Things wherein Nature shows herself most excellent and complete.
Even sensuous pleasures are really confusedly known intellectual pleasures. Music charms us, although its beauty only consists in the harmonies of numbers and in the reckoning of the beats or vibrations of sounding bodies, which meet at certain intervals, reckonings of which we are not conscious and and which the soul nevertheless does make. The pleasures which sight finds in proportions are of the same natures; and those caused by the other senses amount to almost the same thing, although we may not be able to explain it so distinctly.
The fastest effect of all is that which affects the heart; and the shortest of all moments, if I may speak like that, is that in which "le je ne sais quoi" makes its effect. If the causes of the effects are secret and hidden, the feelings and sentiments they arouse in us are correspondingly inexplicable.
At Club Rectum
Yet not entirely perfect, if beauty be not accompanied with Grace. Grace must season the parts we have spoken of and everywhere follow Genius: ”La pittura ti rappresenta in un’ subito la sua essentia nellu virtú visiva e per il prorio mezzo, d’onde la impressiva receve li obietti naturali et anchora nel medesimo tempo, nel quale si compone l’armonica proportionallitá delle parti, che compongono il tutto, che contenta il senso.”
Before Club Rectum
Only then can he shape heroes for posterity, by presenting to their eyes the great actions and the virtues of famous men, not by the cold means of reading, but by the very sight of the facts and the actors: ”Elle suprend le Spectateur qui en sent l’effet sans en penetrer la veritable cause: mais cette Grace ne touche son cæur que selon la disposition qu’elle y recontre. On peut la definir, Ce qui plait, & ce qui gagne le cæur sans pesser par l’esprit.”
