Reviews
- Edited 2 years agoI'd always been a massive fan of CD1. The what i'd describe as the 'uplifting house' CD.
It starts out a bit weird with a monologue (it's not a musical number, just a monologue, then the first track starts).
What follows is some great summer vocal house anthems, nothing dull, boring or repetative. There's only a few tracks I skip - See The Trouble With Me (ugh) and Jungle Boogle; nobody wants to hear anybody say OO-Wuh OO-Wuh in a track.
Rest of the CD is pretty solid, mixings fine and as the pace is kept pretty much vocal house the whole way through there's no real journey in there. A bit more of a party feeling when Life Goes On kicks in (wicked track, love it).
CD2...CD2 is where it goes down hill for me. When I bought it back in 2000 I listened to the first few tracks and thought "wow, this is boring" then skip-listened the rest of the CD and it was much the same...then never bothered listening to it again, failing one or two times when I decided "I'll give it another chance" only to come to the same conclusion.
Well this time around I forced myself to sit through it. Turns out it's really not as bad as I thought, you just have to be in the right mood for it (or be into progressive house...tehcno-edged trance) The entire CD is quite laid back. That sounds good but often it lapses into bordom, other times mindless repetition and then in its best parts really mellow house/trance. About half the CD is enjoyable to anyone who likes a bit of variety, the rest of it is basically drum loops with very little change.
I don't care what anyone says, How's Your Evening So Far? is a terrible track with few redeeming features, and there are too many other tracks like that on here. From a distance it looks like CD2 has a pretty interesting track list, but most of the tracks are just..dull remixes of a great tracks.
CD2 does bring down the compilation as a whole, but if you're into vocal house from this era it really is worth picking up this for CD1.
My ratings system:
324 out of 500 a 3 star, but its very unbalanced (CD1 is basically a 4 star, CD2 a very weak 3 star)
CD2 I played maybe twice. The first time I got 5 tracks in and thought "wow this is boring" then skipped through the rest of the tracks to see if there was anything good. There wasn't. That was back in 2000. A few times since then I'd put CD2 back in the player to make sure I hadn't done it needlessly; only to confirm my view each time.
