"Faust IV" is a great album by a great band. This expanded edition is a welcome addition to their discography as it has a second disc of previously unreleased material. However, a lot of this bonus material also appear on the "Wümme Years 1970-73" 5 CD box set released in 2000, although with some songs under alternate titles. The bad thing about this reissue is the fact that the main album has been remastered by someone who's very fond of noise reduction, and the sound quality suffers because of this. I suggest getting the old US Caroline CD which sounds very good, complete with tape hiss but from the right tapes. The UK Virgin CD might use the same mastering, but I haven't compared them.

Highly recommended expanded double CD release of the indispensable IVth album by the German masters. Crucial input from Rudolf Sosna who was responsible for a lot of the humour and the surreal, melodic songs of Faust. Much missed - they were never the same without him.

At the time IV seemed a notch-down from the first three masterpieces. History views it kindly and it can at least hold its own... maybe in some strange way, it's even better.

The Sad Skinhead... which seemed out of time and out of place... now presents itself as a timeless pop/cod-reggae behemoth.
Krautrock - what can be said? A grating, grinding incessantly gripping drone classic.

The pastoral sections... leading to the unbelievable climactic It's a Bit Of a Pain. This one used to be played to squareish types back in the mid 70s in order to judge their character. Those that 'got it' were automatically lifted out of the bottom of the league.
There is nothing really like this track anywhere, anytime. Rudolf plays the vomiting guitar on this one.

The Peel sessions and alternate versions are essential too. EMI/Virgin did good work on this re-release.
