Rhythmically this isn't house at all. It has a backbeat for one thing. It's actually closer to sophiti-pop or -jazz. The verse chords have a lovely YMO feel to it. A wonderful slice of early 1980s.

Why is this classed as a House track? If anything, it's more of a "Dance" track, I don't really hear the "House" element in this one.

Thanx mixotech. I also figured it had something to do with NYC Garage and the underground club scene. I'm just having trouble getting over the the Madonna-esque feel to it - so be it. If I were to class this in my collection, it would be right in-there with the other non-house dance jams that were played in house sets by the Chicago legends, like Farley "Jackmaster" Funk, Mickey Oliver, Edward Crosby, et al.

I think it must be because it has something of that 'New York garage' feel in the production, though it's more like early Madonna in some ways as well but less pop. It got club play but was so different to what was around at the time that it didn't fall easily into DJ sets so has become something of a 'cult classic'. I agree it's not really house music but it was sort of part of that post-disco experimental period that evolved (partly) into house music.

It is a beautiful dance record, Thomas Dolby production added his electronic touch to it.
It has a typical 80ies feeling. With an influence of early New Wave music.
It has nothing of a prototype for house music, like probably Fancy-come inside...call it what u want.
Dance to it.

A very, very early house track that was recorded by German-born Bertei in 1983, it didn't chart but it's a landmark song in the birth of house music.

I don't remember this being a landmark house track. Also, Adele Bertein was born in Cleveland, not Germany. Her early musical days were part of that city's punk scene.

It actually charted VERY well on Billboard's Dance Club Airplay charts, hitting #5 in the summer of 1983, which suggests it got plenty of spins at the time! Great tune indeed.
