Wow. I picked up 'Something', 'Something Else' 'I Capricorn' and 'And I Love You So' during the 90s at various charity shops and car boot sales along with loads of other records. I shelved them for a few years and forgot about them. Johnny Harris was one of my all time favourite orchestral arrangers, composers/conductors and I was a fan of much of his work. A few years later in the 90's and Shirley's version of 'Spinning Wheel' was released on a 7". Not having heard it before it piqued my interest to dig out those old albums I'd stored.
I started with 'Capricorn' and within a few minutes I'd realised I'd been sleeping on these albums. Jawdropping, luminous productions in a reverb soaked 'easy listening/lounge' style (that was so popular in the 90's with the Karminsky's and the ''In Flight Entertainment' and 'The Sound Gallery' library/easy comps) lush, often funky 3D orchestral arrangements, deep as the sea vocals and song choices. And of course, that voice. I was always a little sceptical of Shirly's bombastic style, but on these albums she displays a real emotional range that was touching, funny, moving, contemplative, uptempo, sassy and all points in between. It all sounded so contemporary still, I was amazed.
I also noticed the sample potential which Public Enemy, amongst others seem to have also noticed.
If you want good examples of funky/mellow/haunting, slightly psychedelic and cinematic orchestral/big band music with top notch soulful vocals, I would point you in the direction of these four albums.
The synergy of Harris and Bassey is a lovely thing to behold.
They're also pretty cheap so do yourself a favour and grab them.
    Edit-
As yet, I've still to cop hold of her later albums like 'Never, Never, Never', but they're on the list...,
