I really enjoy John Abercrombie, as well as '70s ECM releases, as well as guitar trio recordings. Checking all three boxes here.

I started with "Gateway II" which I found very enjoyable, slightly drum-forward trio record with some inventive improvisational moments. By comparison, this album is more bass-forward, a little more jammy and loose, with less sophistication than II. Make no mistake, these are three masters at work making creative soundscapes.

The recording is clean, with a decent mix. Side B sounds a bit bright, emphasis on 6KHz and up.

I was lucky to find a sealed copy. I'd start with #2 and work your way back. 3.5 stars.

I believe this to be some of the most explosive, energetic and original jazz on the entire ecm label... I dig it! Feel free to leave suggestions for similar sounding albums, thanks.

LP: ECM 1061 ST (Germany) - What ist the difference between these Vinyl editions John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette - Gateway vs. John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette - Gateway (Blue Label seems green).
In my Collection i've a Version with a silvery sticker "2301 061 ECM 1061" at the cover, placed where the Label is printed.
        Is this a different version?
The rest ist equal to these two versions.
        Thx for an answer.
