Possibly Overkill’s fifth best album ever

Released in 2017, THE GRINDING WHEEL is the eighteenth album by New Jersey’s Overkill and is the first of their fourth decade of releasing albums (their first, FEEL THE FIRE, debuted in 1985).

What I like best about Overkill is their diversity. Yes, they’re a thrash band, but they’re so much more: They’re rooted in traditional metal (e.g. Accept), but mix it with a lot of thrash and generous amounts of speed, punk, doom and power. Their last three albums – IRONBOUNB (2010), THE ELECTRIC AGE (2012) and WHITE DEVIL ARMORY (2014) – were all kinetic modern thrash releases, but they were very similar in approach, and this explains why Blitz referred to them as the Father, Son and Holy Ghost of Overkill (lol).

THE GRINDING WHEEL is less conventional and includes a couple of stellar cuts, like “The Long Road” with its ultra-catchy intro and the stunning title track with its haunting fadeout chant. The lengthy “Mean Green Killing Machine” is a fittingly driving opener and – as is usual with Overkill – offers a hooky mid-section with “Whoa-oh-oh” type background vox.

Speaking of which, that’s another thing I love about Overkill, their penchant for including interesting or quirky parts to their songs, which offsets the rest of the composition and prevents them from being one-dimensional. The eerie acoustic break in “Shine On” is a good example.

The bonus track, “Emerald,” is a well-done Thin Lizzy cover.

      GRADE: A-/B+
